The resident of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, was found unconscious Tuesday morning at the edge of a pond after being attacked by a crocodile, Beaufort police said in a statement.

Rescue operations were disrupted by the animal “monitoring” her body, she said.

This is “the second fatal alligator attack in the county (…) in less than a year”.

In August 2022, an 88-year-old woman was attacked and killed by an alligator near her home.

These reptiles are common in the southeastern United States, especially in the state of Florida, where they can be seen crossing the street or soaking up the sun on golf club turf.
