In recent months, the Apulian internal doctors are making an enormous contribution to management multidisciplinary of the patient suffering from Sars-Cov-2. The data just published by FADOI Scientific Society of Hospital Internal Medicine show a particularly important picture in the management of Covid in Italy, with the 67% of the hospitalizations carried out in the internal medicine wards. 11% of the remaining hospitalizations take place in Infectious Disease wards, 11% in Intensive Care, 5% in Geriatrics and 4% in Pneumology.
Equally interesting is the data concerning the hospitalizations of patients managed directly by Internal Medicine in Italy, now equal to 90% of the total, to which is added the relationship between i patients over 65 and the presence of several different pathologies in the same individual. In fact, Puglia presents a situation in line with national data, with 23% of Covid patients aged over 65, therefore more at risk than exposure to Coronavirus. Among them 39% have one chronic disease and 21% have two.
Precisely these data will be at the heart of the conference of FADOI Puglia, the Federation of Associations of Hospital Internists which since 1995 has the intention of promoting the development of medical-scientific knowledge and clinical research. “The conference is entitled”Multi Webinar Experience“- explains the President of FADOI Puglia Dr. Franco Mastroianni – and will present on the days of 2, 4, 10 and 11 December reports by leading regional internists. In fact, internal medicine cannot ignore a human component and technical-scientific skills. Knowing how to use an ultrasound of the abdomen, knowing how to do an echocardiogram, reading a blood gas or using a spirometer are important assets for the modern internist, because we are dealing with the management of a complex patient, characterized by comorbidities and polypharmacy “.

This is precisely the fil rouge that guided the organization of the regional congress in webinar mode and carried out in partnership with the “F. Miulli” Hospital of Acquaviva delle Fonti, four dates in which the fundamental issues of internal medicine will be addressed. It starts on 2 December with the COPD at the time of Covid, with clinic and therapy as the background to expert reports. On December 4th we will talk about heart failure, as data shows that approximately 20% of patients discharged from internal medicine wards have some form of heart failure. Yes will then continue with December 10, in which we will talk about thrombosis, atrial fibrillation and embolism, very important topics also in the light of the use of the new oral anticoagulants. Finally on 11 December a day dedicated to Fadoi projects, in which we will talk about SOWING multicentre regional study (SEpsis Management in iNternal medicine Apulia), which involved 30 units of internal medicine on sepsis. We will talk about the remote control of chronic diseases such as diabetes and COPD, but also of the FADOI youth project on heart failure, with the ambitious goal of creating dedicated clinics in the field of internal medicine.
Internal medicine in Puglia can count about 40 departments with more than 600 beds, where complex patients are managed. For more than 25 years Puglia has been meeting in congresses, with moments in which conviviality is linked to the scientific aspect. Some operative units have successfully realized the critical area of internal medicine in which the patient is managed in a sub-intensive or intensive way, a heritage that must be enhanced, expanded and promoted, also through the December congress.
