Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology noted that 67.3% of children who tested positive for Covid-19 were asymptomatic. This was conveyed by the Eijkman Institute on its official Twitter and Instagram accounts, Saturday (26/6/2021).
From March to November 2020, Head of LBM Eijkman Amin Soebandrio and his colleagues studied 1,973 samples of children under 18 years of age. Of these, they found 208 children were exposed to Covid-19.
“From 208 children, as many as 140 positive Covid-19 patients have no symptoms,” as quoted from the Instagram account @eijkmannstitute, Saturday (26/6)
On Twitter, Eijkman also said that, “Prof. Amin and the team from LBM Eijkman have succeeded in publishing a journal entitled “Characteristics of children with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in Indonesia,” he said.
In the description of the photo uploaded in the tweet on Twitter, Eijkman explained that X-ray confirmed pneumonia was more commonly found in the age group 1-5 years (77%) and 6-10 years (66.7%).
This means that the majority of children infected with SARS-CoV-2 have no symptoms or mild symptoms. However, children who are positive for Covid-19 have a very large role in the transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in a population.
Previously, the General Chair of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI) Dr. Dr. Aman Bhakti Pulungan, SpA(K), FAAP, said that 1 out of 8 positive confirmed cases of Covid-19 were children.
“Current national data, the proportion of positive confirmed cases of Covid-19 in children aged 0-18 years is 12.5 percent. This means that 1 out of 8 confirmed cases is a child,” he said.
However, he said, what is a problem and needs to be watched out for is that many of these children have not been able to express the symptoms of the illness they are experiencing, especially in toddlers.
Therefore, knowing the symptoms of a child’s corona is important so that parents are more vigilant.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), infants under one year of age and children with certain conditions or illnesses are more susceptible to developing severe symptoms if infected with COVID-19.
The following are symptoms of corona in children, but overall, children will experience symptoms similar to adults if infected, here are the symptoms, according to Eijkman’s findings:
-Fever or chills
-Cough
– Stuffy nose or runny nose
-Loss of sense of smell
-Sore throat
– Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing kesulitan
-Diarrhea
-Nausea or vomiting
-Stomach ache
-Fatigue
-Headache
-Muscle or body pain
-Loss of appetite, especially in infants under one year of age.
Worse, the above symptoms can be exacerbated if the infected child has comorbidities or comorbidities.
Here are some conditions in children to watch out for if infected with COVID-19.
-Asthma or chronic lung disease
-Diabetes
-Genetic, neurological, or metabolic conditions
-Sickle cell disease
-Heart disease from birth
-Immune system disorders
-Children with various chronic conditions that affect many parts of the body
