A 65-year-old woman was bitten in the leg by a shark on Tuesday while swimming in the waters of Rockaway Beach Park on 59th Avenue in New York.
Local authorities rushed to the scene after receiving an emergency call around 6 p.m. Tuesday evening.
They discovered that the lady had a serious leg injury, according to CNN information.
“All indications lead us to believe it would be a shark bite,” said the New York City Emergency Service.
The victim was swimming peacefully in the water until she felt a severe laceration in the back of her left thigh and fell into the water, the New York Police Department said, according to ABC News.
Beach lifeguards pulled the lady out of the water and emergency services installed a tourniquet on the victim’s leg to cut off the blood.
As a precaution, Rockaway Beach has closed access to its beach for the day.
“As a safety measure, Rockaway Beach will be closed for swimming and surfing today, August 8, due to recent shark activity,” NYK Parks tweeted.
