Despite the widespread quarantine measures in China, the number of deaths from the novel corona virus has risen significantly again. As the authorities in the central Chinese province of Hubei announced on Wednesday, another 65 people have died there from the previous day as a result of the infection.
The official total death toll in mainland China grew to at least 490. There is also a deceased person in the Chinese Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
In addition, according to the regional authorities, the number of people infected with the pathogen in Hubei rose by a further 3,156 patients. The total number of people suffering from the virus in China rose to more than 23,000. Hubei is the center of the epidemic, the virus had started from the metropolis of Wuhan. The authorities have largely sealed off Hubei from the outside world.
In the fight against the epidemic, the Chinese authorities continued to drastically quarantine Tuesday. Freedom of movement has been massively restricted in Zhejiang province on the east coast, affecting around twelve million people. Zhejiang is located near the economic metropolis of Shanghai.
From China, the virus has spread to at least 25 countries. Belgium recently reported an infection. So far there have been no confirmed cases in Austria.
Meanwhile, ten cases of the new corona virus have been found aboard a quarantined cruise ship in Japan, the Japanese Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday. No information was initially given on the nationality of those affected.
The reason for the quarantine measure was an 80-year-old from Hong Kong who had tested positive for the corona virus on Saturday. The man got on January 20 in Tokyo’s neighboring city of Yokohama and disembarked the “Diamond Princess” in Hong Kong five days later. A total of 3,700 passengers and crew members are on the ship.
