A 64-year-old man who set off smoke bombs and shot in a crowded subway car in NY in 2022 he was sentenced this Thursday (10/05/2023) to life imprisonment for terrorist acts.
As demanded by the prosecution, a federal judge sentenced Frank James to “10 simultaneous life sentences in prison, plus 10 years to be served consecutively,” the Brooklyn federal prosecutor’s office reported on the social network X, formerly Twitter.
During the morning rush hour on April 12, 2022, James – wearing a gas mask, a yellow hard hat, and an orange workman’s vest – detonated two smoke bombs on the Brooklyn subway before firing several shots, causing general panic in a city still traumatized by the attacks of September 11, 2001.
Frank James pleaded guilty
There were no fatalities, which authorities called a miracle, but 10 people were wounded by gunfire and others suffered injuries amid the chaos.
“Among the passengers on the subway car were children on their way to school, families, pregnant women, college students and New Yorkers heading to work,” prosecutors said in their statement.
Photos of the events showed extensive blood stains inside the train and trails of blood on the platform of the 36th Street station, in the Sunset Park neighborhood.
James was detained without resistance in Manhattan after a chase of more than 24 hours.
After initially proclaiming his innocence, he pleaded guilty to terrorist acts on January 3, 2023. His lawyers have said he had a history of mental illness.
