Turkish Earthquake Aftermath: Contractor Released,Then Rearrested

The devastating earthquakes that struck Turkey on February 6,2023,claimed the ⁣lives of over 53,000 people across 11 provinces. The tragedy has led to widespread investigations into building construction practices,​ and one case highlights the complexities of assigning blame and achieving justice.

Mahmut Sutıcı, the builder and owner of‌ a tractor gallery located on the ground floor of the​ collapsed‍ Sutıcı Apartment building in Kahramanmaraş, faced a potential prison⁢ sentence of up to​ 618 years. ⁤He was initially released following a‍ court hearing.However, this release‍ was short-lived.

According to ANKA‍ news agency reporter Mehmet Oflaz, Sutıcı’s release on December 11th was met with opposition, leading to a renewed arrest warrant issued on December 23rd.⁣ Authorities have yet to locate him.

The Sutıcı​ Apartment ‌building’s collapse resulted in 24 fatalities and 12 injuries.The Kahramanmaraş ​Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office charged Sutıcı with “intentional murder with probable intent” and “intentional wounding with probable intent.” Expert reports revealed that Sutıcı had compromised the building’s structural integrity by altering load-bearing pillars to accommodate his shop and adding extra weight to the roof.
