600 kilograms of microplastics per year in Flemish rivers and streams via domestic waste water

Flemish Minister for the Environment Zuhal Demir (N-VA) is pleased that results are now available on the amount of microplastics in Flemish waters. “It is important that we have investigated this. It is also reassuring to hear that the problem in Flanders is no bigger than in the rest of Europe and that the effect on the environment is negligible.”

“But we must continue to pay attention to microplastics. We purify our waste water well, but we have to work even more on sewers. We also have to keep an eye on microplastics due to tire wear. Especially with the arrival of electric cars that are heavier and the tires will therefore wear out faster.
