According to estimates by the European Commission, up to 80 percent of the EU population has already been infected with the corona virus.
“An estimated 60 to 80 percent of the EU population has now been infected with Covid,” said EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides on Wednesday.

Registered corona cases in about 30 percent of the EU population
According to the EU health authority, the reported cases have so far affected around 30 percent of the European population.

Further mutation of the corona virus possible
If you add the unreported infections, it could be up to 350 million people, which is about 77 percent. As the number of infections and deaths related to Covid-19 has recently decreased, the EU is now moving away from mass testing and reporting cases, Kyriakides said. However, a recurrence of cases is to be expected as another mutation of the virus is likely.

EU Commission warns countries of new corona waves in autumn
The Commission therefore called on the countries of the international community to prepare to be able to switch back to emergency mode and to step up vaccination campaigns. In a document outlining the strategy for the period after the emergency phase of the pandemic, Brussels warns to push ahead with vaccinating the unvaccinated, especially children, before the start of the new school year.

Child vaccination rate is less than 15 percent
According to the document, the vaccination rate for children between the ages of five and nine – the youngest age group for which Covid vaccines are approved – is less than 15 percent in Europe. In the case of young people between the ages of 15 and 17, on the other hand, it is over 70 percent. The EU also wants to support the development of new drugs against Covid-19, especially antivirals that are easier to store and administer. The corona pills from Pfizer and Merck & Co have already been approved. However, due to the high prices and complicated national prescription procedures, they have been slow to gain acceptance.
