The metropolis of New York is increasingly becoming a hotspot in the coronavirus crisis in the USA: US Vice President Mike Pence said yesterday evening (local time) in the White House that 60 percent of all new cases in the USA now come from the New York area.
The infection rate in the east coast metropolis is one in a thousand – around five to ten times higher than in the equally badly affected state of Washington on the west coast of the USA. Pence called on people from New York who have left the city to voluntarily put themselves into a 14-day quarantine. “We have to consider Greater New York City as a high-risk area.”
Economic consequences according to Trump more deadly
According to US President Donald Trump, the economic consequences of the far-reaching measures to combat the coronavirus epidemic could “destroy a country”. The extensive shutdown of public life and the closure of shops are devastating for the economy, Trump said yesterday in an interview with the television channel Fox News.
Plunging the country into a “massive recession” or even “depression” because of the coronavirus could ultimately cost more lives than the epidemic itself, Trump warned. Tens of thousands of people die each year as a result of the flu and car accidents, but nobody wants to shut down the whole country because of it, Trump said. The president once again made it clear that he wants to lift the extensive closure of the country as soon as possible, at least in parts of the country less affected by the epidemic.
The two weeks ordered by the government would end on Monday. Then the situation will be checked and there may be “a little more time,” said Trump. The currently ordered isolation of many people at home will also lead to “thousands of suicides,” warned Trump.
