“60 eggs in one hand”: why the price of fried egg derivatives is rising – the Prosecutor General’s Office intervened: EADaily

Residents of Belgorod have been standing in line at the store at the Southern Fair since five in the morning. As the townspeople told the Open Belgorod Telegram channel, they wanted to buy chicken eggs for 70 rubles, since in regular stores the price is already almost 180 rubles.

Belgorod residents complained that, despite the long line, only one car with the coveted product arrived. The day before, on December 9, local citizens stood in lines for eggs for 64 rubles at a street fair of goods from local producers and did not leave even after it closed.

Head of the region Vyacheslav Gladkov claims that here is “the lowest price for an egg that is generally available in the Central Federal District.” Residents said: “The shortage is sold at 60 pieces per person, people come in groups of six people from one family.”

The regional authorities explained: eggs have risen in price throughout Russia due to an increase in the price of poultry feed, equipment, packaging and storage. Due to increased demand, the number of points where you can buy eggs has been increased, says Gladkov.

According to Rosstat, by November, eggs in Russia had risen in price by 40.3% in annual terms. In turn, the Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov ordered to check regional producers and sellers if the average retail price of chicken eggs in the region increased by more than 40%.

Meanwhile, on December 8, Rosselkhoznadzor allowed the import of eggs from 17 Turkish enterprises, Kommersant reports.

The cost of prices for chicken eggs in Russian stores jumped sharply due to several factors, says Doctor of Economics, former head of the department of agro-industrial complex of the Russian government Leonid Kholod:

“The first factor is seasonal. It is now December, however, prices have risen ahead of time, but, obviously, trade is also preparing for an increase in effective demand. The end of December is the peak of effective demand. In connection with the holidays, people buy not only all kinds of food for the table, but also for ten days, because they will sit at home and eat at home. In any case, from the second half of December there should have been an increase in prices for many things that are needed for the New Year.”

In addition, chicken eggs have become more expensive due to inflation and increased prices for other food products, the expert believes:

“The second point that, from my point of view, could have an impact is the rise in price of poultry and pork. Additional demand from those people who cannot buy these types of meat falls on animal protein products – eggs. One way or another, some additional demand fell from meat.”

Producers, like egg sellers, have costs, and they are growing, Kholod summarizes:

“No one has canceled inflation, electricity prices have risen, and poultry farms are very dependent on energy resources. Everything else that poultry farmers use has become more expensive. In particular, many modern poultry farms are imported projects, a lot of equipment is imported, it is complex and requires maintenance. In addition to sanctions, this is the foreign currency component of the cost – they spend foreign currency on spare parts, maintenance, replacement, and the foreign currency has become much more expensive.”
