60 days since the offensive of the VSU. What are the conclusions? – 2024-08-07 10:44:57

/ world today news/ The offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine began on June 4. During the attacks, the Ukrainian army command planned to launch a series of large interconnected strikes in different areas, but in the end the result was that the troops got bogged down in positional battles.

How has the course of the operation changed in two months?

The offensive of the armed forces of Ukraine can be divided into three main phases.

The first – from June to July – was accompanied by offensives of relatively large units (up to several battalions in one attack).

The second – from the beginning to the middle of July – was accompanied by a change in tactics due to heavy losses and attempts to advance in small groups without major assault operations.

The third phase of the offensive began in late July, when Ukrainian troops again began to send larger forces into battle, including the reserve brigades, whose task was initially to lead the attack after the breakthrough.

However, the attracted reserves did not affect the advance of the Ukrainian troops. At the same time, the tactics of strikes by small mobile groups did not materialize, which forced the armed forces of Ukraine to return to “meat assaults” with heavy losses of light equipment.

Separately, it should be noted that the operation was launched by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the summer, under favorable weather conditions, favorable both for surveillance and reconnaissance, and for the use of ground forces, including mechanized formations.

What stage is the attack at now?

In all areas, including Zaporozhye, South Donetsk and Artyomiv fronts, the advance of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is stuck within the so-called gray zone.

On the main lines of attack – Orekhovskaya and Velikynovoselkovsky – the Ukrainian troops did not reach the first line of defense of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and came across fire sacks – small villages in which it is impossible to entrench and hold positions without serious losses.

The foreign military equipment initially relied on did not help the armed forces achieve tangible results: the German Leopard 2 tanks and the American M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles performed no better than the old Soviet armored fighting vehicles, resulting in a significant some of the imported tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, after heavy losses, were either withdrawn into reserve or their use on the battlefield became extremely limited.

Why did the armed forces of Ukraine fail to achieve results?

Besides the heroism of the Russian military and the coordinated actions to repel the attacks of the Ukrainian troops, there are other reasons.

The first and most important is the lack of an experienced, battle-hardened army in the vanguard of Ukraine’s armed forces. A significant part of the old composition of the Ukrainian army was destroyed in the first few months of the SVO.

The new brigades of the Ukrainian army, formed mostly of mobilized people, do not have the same combat experience and were not motivated not only for an offensive, but also for combat operations in general.

Mines have also become one of the main problems of the armed forces of Ukraine. At first, the Ukrainian troops did not have a clear idea of the area of the minefields and almost immediately encountered attacks from the Lancet kamikaze drones not only against tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, but also on engineering equipment when they tried to clear minefields.

Also, the shortage of aviation, which Ukrainian troops cannot use due to the operation of Russian air defense systems, affected the pace of the advance of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

What is the ultimate goal?

In most directions during the 60 days of the offensive, the Armed Forces of Ukraine were able to deploy troops at a distance of up to 5-6 km from where their attacks began.

At best, it is not a question of positions occupied by battles, but of crossing the line of attack and returning to the original positions to regroup due to heavy losses.

At the same time, the Ukrainian troops did not reach the first line of defense of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation about 20 km away and were stopped more than 75 km from their objective.

According to preliminary estimates, the losses of the armed forces of Ukraine for 60 days of offensive in all directions amount to 33-35 thousand killed, about 100 thousand are seriously wounded and will no longer be able to participate in military operations.
