60+ Countries Support Agreement to Triple Renewable Energy and Phase Out Coal Ahead of COP28 – Reuters

Two informed officials told Reuters on Thursday that more than 60 countries announced their support for an agreement led by the European Union, the United States and the UAE in an effort to triple renewable energy this decade and shift away from the use of coal.

The two officials added that the European Union, the United States and the UAE are mobilizing support for this pledge before the annual climate conference held by the United Nations (COP28) in Dubai from November 30 to December 12. They will also call for this pledge to be included in the final results that will be issued by the international meeting of world leaders in December 2nd.

The two officials told Reuters that some major emerging economies such as Nigeria, South Africa and Vietnam, developed countries such as Australia, Japan, Canada and other countries such as Peru, Chile, Zambia and Barbados have said they will join the pledge.

According to the draft pledge seen by Reuters, it will obligate parties that sign it to double the global annual rate of energy efficiency improvement to four percent annually until 2030.

The draft says the use of renewable energy must be accompanied by a “phasing out of the use of unprocessed coal,” including stopping financing for new coal-fired power plants.

One official told Reuters that negotiations with China and India to join the pledge are “very advanced” although the two countries have not yet agreed to join.

Scientists say that both measures – rapidly expanding the use of clean energy and rapidly reducing the burning of fossil fuels that cause carbon dioxide emissions in the energy sector – are necessary if the world is to avoid more severe and extreme consequences of climate change.

The two officials said that showing early support for tripling renewable energy and moving away from coal would create momentum and have a positive impact before the intense negotiations expected in the days of the climate conference.
