The U.S. authorities have strengthened their vigilance, believing that threats against Jews and Muslims in the U.S. are increasing following the outbreak of war between Israel and the Palestinian armed faction Hamas.

According to a report by the New York Times (NYT) and a local police announcement on the 15th (local time), police in Will County, Illinois, arrested Joseph Chuba (71) on charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder and are investigating. Police have also filed hate crime charges.

Chuba is accused of stabbing a 6-year-old boy to death at a home in Plainfield Township, a southwest suburb of Chicago, on the 14th, and also injuring the boy’s mother.

Chuba was the landlord of the house the mother and son were renting, and committed the crime because he was angry after seeing news about the Middle East, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the largest Muslim organization in the United States.

According to what CAIR learned from the boy’s father, Chuba, the homeowner, knocked on the boy’s door on the 14th, and when the boy’s mother opened the door, he shouted, “Muslims must die!” and attempted to strangle her and attack her with a weapon.

The boy’s mother managed to escape to the bathroom and called 911. A short time later, the mother came out of the bathroom and discovered that her 6-year-old son had been stabbed with a weapon.

The boy suffered 26 stab wounds and was taken to the hospital, where he eventually died, local police said. The boy’s mother was also seriously injured, suffering more than a dozen wounds in the attack with a weapon, but fortunately, it was reported that her life was not in danger.

Local police said, “The suspect brutally attacked the two victims because they were Muslims amid the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel.”

CAIR’s Chicago chapter said in a statement: “Our worst nightmare has unfolded, and we pray with heavy hearts for the boy and his mother.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has strengthened its vigilance, tracking increasing threats to Jews and Muslims in the United States following the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas.

FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a briefing today that the war between Israel and Hamas could encourage violent acts within the United States.

Although no evidence has been found that Hamas supporters have ordered attacks in the United States since the outbreak of war, the possibility of such attacks cannot be ruled out, Ray said.

“We cannot and do not ignore the possibility that Hamas or other foreign terrorist organizations may exploit the conflict to call on their supporters to attack U.S. soil,” Wray said.

The FBI said it is reaching out to religious leaders to discuss potential threats to their communities and is strengthening cooperation with police to protect Jewish and Islamic religious facilities in the United States.
