JAKARTA – The rise of hacking lately makes Twitter tighten security. Namely, making the security key the only Two-factor authentication (2FA) method.

The 2FA security system requires two types of authentication that its users perform, to strengthen the security of their online accounts. Through the @TwitterSafety account, Twitter provides tips on how to make users keep their accounts more secure:

1. Use a unique password
Minimum use of 10 characters combination of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Use a different password for each website you visit. Consider using password management software that can securely store all login information. In addition, users can select Password reset protection in Twitter Account settings.

2. Two-factor authentication
Two-factor authentication (2FA) ensures that only people with access to the password and mobile number (or security key) can log into Twitter accounts. Starting late June 2021, users have the option of using a security key as the only form of two-factor authentication (2FA), which is the most effective way to keep Twitter accounts secure.

3. Log in via the official Twitter site
Phishing is always lurking. The appearance of a phishing web is similar to the Twitter login page, which is very vulnerable to misleading users. Always check the opened links, both from emails and Direct Messages before providing personal data. Including passwords. Change the password as soon as possible if it is phishing.

4. Be wary of parties on behalf of Twitter
Always be wary if there are parties claiming to be Twitter representatives. Twitter never asks users for passwords via email, Direct Messages, or replies. Do not open attachments or links if you receive a message to install any software.

5. Be alert for suspicious login alerts
Twitter will send notifications via email or push notifications if it detects suspicious activity or when logging into a Twitter account from a new device for the first time.

These notifications usually include a location that is an approximate IP address used to access Twitter. Through this notification, the user can verify who is actually logged in through the device.

6. Check the link on Twitter
People on Twitter share a lot of interesting information, and many share links to other sites, either through Tweets or Direct Messages. If viewing a link using a URL shortener, such as bit.ly or TinyURL, check the direction of the link before opening it. Use the free plug-ins from Chrome and Firefox to show extended URLs without having to click them first.
