TEMPO.CO, Jakarta –Hemorrhoids or hemorrhoid is a condition where there is a lump in and around the buttocks or anus.
Often characterized by blood spots and discomfort when defecate, what steps can be taken to prevent hemorrhoids?
According to Mayoclinic at mayoclinic.org, the best way to prevent hemorrhoids is to keep the stool soft and easy to pass. Tips include:
1. Eat high -fiber foods
High fiber can be obtained by consuming lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The fiber content can soften the stool which will help facilitate digestion and excrete faeces.
2. Drink lots of fluids
Drinking six to eight glasses of water and other fluids (not alcohol) every day helps keep stools soft.
3. Take fiber supplements
Most people do not get the recommended daily intake of fiber, which is about 20 to 30 grams a day. To meet this intake, you should take fiber supplements that are sold freely in the market, such as psyllium (Metamucil) or methylcellulose (Citrucel) which are useful for improving overall symptoms and bleeding from hemorrhoids.
When taking fiber supplements, it is required to drink at least eight glasses of water or other fluids every day. Otherwise, supplements may cause or worsen constipation.
4. Reduce tension
Straining and holding your breath while trying to have a bowel movement can create greater pressure on the veins in the lower rectum. Which can increase the risk of hemorrhoids.
5. Don’t hold back the urge to defecate
When you feel the urge to defecate, you should immediately throw it away. Because holding back a bowel movement until the feeling goes away can make the stool dry and more difficult to pass.
6. Sports
Regular exercise can help prevent constipation and reduce pressure on blood vessels from prolonged standing or exercise sit. Exercise can also help lose excess weight that may be contributing to hemorrhoids.
In addition, to prevent hemorrhoids should avoid sitting for long periods of time (whether on the toilet or not). Because sitting for long periods of time can increase the pressure on the veins in the anus.
