I’ve been using the iPhone 15 Pro for more than a month now, and I’ve been using iOS 17 since last summer, having tested all the beta and stable versions of the operating system.
During this time, I identified for myself the main points that I don’t like at all about these new products. In the case of iOS 17, even upgrading the hardware from 14 Pro to 15 Pro did not help.
I’ll say right away: this is exclusively my opinion, it may not coincide with yours, some quibbles are not so significant, but, subjectively, these problems are present.
Let’s start with the iPhone 15 Pro.
1. Action button stupid
Now Apple is already actively testing iOS 17.2, but even in the new version of the operating system it is not possible to install it on Action button several functions at once. Yes, before it was actually a silent mode lever, but now the company has upgraded it and made it a multifunctional key.
So why not give the opportunity then? program it differently? For example, make not only a long press, but also a double and triple press. On a single click, there is generally only a reminder of what option you “attached” to the button. For what?
Ideally, this key can be add a large number of different automations. And you don’t want to use Siri or reconfigure the button every time to launch them.
Why, for example, can’t I still make myself both a live translator and a VPN activator, and also add Alice to control my smart home? Three different types of clicks, but everything is in one place, which saves time.
2. Heats up from any sneeze
I declare with full responsibility. The A17 Pro is the hottest processor Apple has created in recent years. The transition to a 3nm process technology did not improve the situation.
The iPhone 15 Pro gets hot even in the most basic tasks. I can sit in Safari for 10 minutes, scrolling through news or articles, and the body of the smartphone will already become warm (and should be cold). Even while watching a video on YouTube, it heats up like no other iPhone has done before.
While I was writing this note, the back panel managed to heat up to an almost unpleasant state. I don’t want to talk about games at all – the iPhone does not overheat, but it noticeably increases the temperature of the case, and this is felt great.
3. No 5x optical zoom
In recent years, Apple has moved to a policy of dividing iPhones into two categories: more budget versions and flagships. We have already come to terms with this; the hierarchy required it.
But what irritates me personally is that this year Apple also decided to separate the Pro and Pro Max models. They used to be different only battery and display sizeand now the camera in the “older” version has been made better by adding 5x optical zoom.
Why should I buy myself a smartphone $200 more expensive just for one (!!) function? The format of 6.7-inch “shovels” is inconvenient for me; I feel uncomfortable using them. So what now, do I need to reduce my comfort for the sake of an additional function? In general, such impudence really blows my mind.
4. Charging is still slow, even though it’s USB-C
This year, Apple added a USB-C port to iPhones, which opens up new possibilities for data transfer and charging. However, in the second case, the company decided not to change anything and leave maximum support 27-watt chargersas with Lightning.
At the same time, the Cupertino team, with the transition to USB-C, could also support more powerful power adapters.
I understand that in this way they take care of keeping the battery in good condition for a longer period. However, many iPhone owners change them once a year, including me. So why not add, for example, a separate toggle switch to unlock increased charging power in order to reduce my presence at the outlet.
In some situations, you may urgently need to charge your iPhone in 15-20 minutes, and by that time you would like to already have about 50% of the battery.
And this also takes into account the fact that this iPhone holds a charge no better than the iPhone 14 Pro. It uses up its accumulated energy very quickly.
Now let’s move on to iOS 17.
5. Applications are unstable
What a pity that there is still no horizontal mode
Stability is not about iOS 17. Overall it works well, all animations are smooth, everything loads quite quickly. But I periodically see how this or that application can simply to depend out of the blue or even fly out on the desktop.
This applies to both standard programs and third-party ones. Just yesterday I was creating a new note in the application of the same name, when a keyboard window opened without buttons, and then the application completely froze. Three restarts helped, not even just one.
Or Telegram may periodically crash when adding a photo to a message. It just throws it to the home screen without error and that’s it. And it may also not restart the first time.
YouTube can also crash when listening to a video in the background after half an hour or an hour of work. Or maybe it won’t fly. If we get lucky.
There are a lot of little things like this, and they make you nervous even with the overall good background of the operating system.
6. Endless keyboard fixes
In iOS 17, the company has changed how the keyboard works. Thanks to AI, it has become better at determining what you want to write.
However, completely stupid autocorrects constantly appear that appear completely out of place. For example, “at” is often changed to “about” or “By/by” is replaced by “on”. This can only be solved by forcing autocorrect in the menu Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> Text replacement.
The situation is not getting better with each new version of iOS and it is unknown when it will change.
