Dragonfly together with Coloplasty

MS is a disease of the central nervous system. Damage to the layer around the nerves exposes them and makes them less able to transmit signals to and from the brain. The result is a variety of ailments, from problems with walking to less good or different vision, and therefore also bladder and / or bowel problems. The latter is not known to everyone.

Many people prefer not to talk about it, according to the national MS study. And if it is mentioned, the doctor does not always make the connection with MS. A shame, because with the right help, living with complaints becomes much easier. Do you recognize any of these symptoms? Then it is good to discuss this with your doctor.

1. Frequent urination

MS affects the nerves. As a result, the bladder and sphincter muscles do not always function properly. Bladder problems in MS often start with the smallest amount of urine that signals you to urinate. Annoying if there is no toilet nearby or if you have to constantly get out of bed at night. It helps to drink as little as possible in the evening after 8pm.

2. Difficulty urinating when empty

The reverse is also possible: you have difficulty urinating because your sphincter is too squeezed. Sometimes urine remains in the bladder. Over time you can get a bladder infection. And this in turn can have a negative effect on MS symptoms. It is therefore important to seek help with this, so as to get out of that vicious circle.

How to recognize a bladder infection:

  • You should urinating more oftenespecially at night.
  • You have a burning sensation during urination.
  • You have elevation or fever.
  • You feel pain in the lower abdomen.
  • pee alone small pieces from.

3. Urinary leakage

It also happens that you don’t feel the urge to urinate. The bladder then becomes fuller without you noticing. The result: (possible) loss of urine. Go to the bathroom every 3-4 hours to avoid this annoying situation. It also happens that you feel the urge, but you have no control over it. Training the pelvic floor muscles helps reduce urine loss. The problem persists? A catheter can be a solution.

4. No stool control

The damage to the nervous system caused by MS can also have a major impact on the functioning of the gut. The reflex function is not working or you do not have control over this. You don’t feel the need or have a hard time stopping. As hard as it is to talk about it, try it anyway. With the right help, it doesn’t have to be a hindrance.

MS symptoms can change constantly. For example, the treatment that works for you now may no longer be appropriate in a year. Do you notice that something is changing? Discuss this with your doctor, no matter how small.

5. Block

If too much water is taken from the stool, it will become too hard and large. The result: a blockage / constipation. Some people with MS suffer from it. Drinking more water can help. Certain foods, such as olive oil or extra spicy peppers, can also stimulate bowel functioning. If symptoms persist, a rinse system a possible solution.

6. Suffering from diarrhea

Do you often suffer from diarrhea? Perhaps the reflex function is not working properly. But constipation can also be the culprit. If the bowel movement does not start and the bowel continues to produce loose stools, it is pushed over the block. It may appear that you are suffering from diarrhea, but it is actually due to constipation and something else is happening.

These tips will help you gain more control over your bowel movements:

• Use your natural highlights. The intestine goes to work in the morning, especially after breakfast. This is a good time to go to the bathroom.

• Plan the use of laxatives, so you dare to go out without fear.

• Drink at least 1.5 liters of water a day, even if you have bladder problems. Otherwise this will lead to intestinal problems.

• Eat high in fiber and keep a food diary. This way you find out what your gut responds well to.
