The hockey community will remember the last duel between the New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers for a long time to come. And not only because of the complete “dismantling” of the Flyers, who had to admit defeat 0: 9 – Center Mika Zibanejad equalized an impressive NHL record.
The Rangers went into the game with division rivals without NHL coaching staff. Both head coach David Quinn and his assistants are on the Covid-19 protocol list, so the AHL staff around Kris Knoblauch, who already coached Connor McDavid at the Erie Otters, stepped in.
After the first third the Blueshirts were already leading 2-0 in their home “Madison Square Garden”, but what was to follow in the second 20 minutes was indeed historic. The Rangers should score no less than seven hits with 17 shots on goal at the Flyers’ housing.
Mika Zibanejad was involved in almost every goal. Not only did the Swede with Persian roots celebrate a flawless hat trick, he also contributed three more assists and thus equalized Bryan Trottier’s record for the most points in a game segment.
He achieved this feat on December 23, 1978 when he won the ice with the New York Islanders against the New York Rangers 9: 4. He too celebrated three goals and three assists at the time.
Zibanejad is the first ranger since Mark Messier to score six points in a game. The icon achieved this feat in November 1992. The Rangers scored nine goals for the first time in 23 years – in 1998 they knocked the Tampa Bay Lightning 10-2 off the ice.
