“6 out of 10 Dutch people think that corona measures will last six months” NOW

58 percent of the Dutch expect the corona restrictions to remain in force for at least six months, according to a survey by I&O Research among more than 2,300 Dutch people on Saturday.

A small part of the respondents (10 percent) even take into account that the measures will remain in force for at least another year.

The sample already showed on Friday that the Dutch take the measures very seriously, although this has not been checked by I&O Research. Almost everyone (99 percent) says to keep 1.5 meters away. In addition, almost all respondents (97 percent) say they wash their hands more often and stay at home as much as possible (93 percent).

The study also found that 90 percent of respondents account for an economic contraction as a result of measures to combat the COVID-19 outbreak, such as closing the hospitality industry and working from home as much as possible. Half of the respondents also expect the economic situation to deteriorate.

Trust is fragile

As a result, confidence in the Dutch government’s economic approach is slightly less than in the health approach: 74 percent of the respondents support the economic measures.

Researcher Jasper de Jong says about this AD“Confidence is fragile. There is a lot of promise now made by the cabinet, but at some point the pot will be empty. Then it will have to be seen whether the confidence will last.”

Self-employed people and freelancers are particularly concerned about their finances. 64 percent of them saw their income fall in the past month due to the measures. 40 percent of all freelancers and freelancers have now appealed to one of the government’s emergency economic measures.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person via sneezing and cough drops. The chance of becoming infected through surfaces such as door handles is small. This chance decreases if you wash your hands often.
  • You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
  • The corona measures have resulted in an infected person infecting less than one other person on average. Previously, this so-called reproduction number was between two and three.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
