Since the start of the invasion on February 24, Russia has controlled a number of areas in Ukraine. However, the area is mostly in the east and south.
Some of these regions are, Luhansk and Donestk or known as Donbas, Zaporizhzhia, Mariupol, Melitopol Kherson, and the Crimean Peninsula.
In the midst of Russia’s efforts to control a number of areas in Ukraine, they also continue to launch attacks.
At the end of last July, at least one person was killed in a Russian attack that hit a hotel in the city of Bahamut, Donetsk, Eastern Ukraine.
Russia had previously attacked Odessa to destroy US aid weapons.
“A high-precision long-range missile launched from the sea destroyed a Ukrainian warship and a supply of anti-ship missiles sent by the US to the Kyiv regime,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement quoted by AFP on July 25.
Despite the attacks of Moscow’s troops, why did all of Ukraine not fall even though Russia continued to bombard it?
International relations observer from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Waffa Kharisma, said Russia’s goal to attack, at least for now, was not to overthrow or annex Ukraine.
“But it’s still about preventing Ukraine from getting closer to NATO, demilitarizing Ukraine, defending areas that Russia has controlled such as Crimea, and it could also be related to pushing for regime change in Ukraine,” Waffa said when contacted. CNNIndonesia.comMonday (8/8).
Waffa also stressed that his observations were temporary and far from being a possibility for Russia to bring down Ukraine.
According to him, the war between Russia and Ukraine lasted a long time due to various factors. Starting from the defense strategy of Kyiv troops, to military assistance from the West.
Cut the Russian Logistics Line
In addition, there were also small Ukrainian victories over Russian equipment, such as breaking the logistics chain from incoming tanks so that it was difficult for Russia to control the territory.
Most recently, Ukraine destroyed a strategic bridge crossing the Dnipro River, in the city of Kherson.
“An extraordinary night for the colonists [Rusia] in the Kherson region. Destruction of the Antonovsky bridge,” wrote the Ukrainian military official in the city of Kherson, Sergei Khlan, on Facebook.
The impact of the attack on this bridge was quite large. The Antonovsky Bridge is the main supply link between the city and the southern bank of the Dnipro.
The destruction made Russia rethink supply lines.
When asked whether Russia was deliberately prolonging the war in Ukraine, Waffa had his own opinion.
“Regarding deliberately prolonging the ‘breath’, so far it is certainly not from the Russian side,” he said.
From the Russian side who started the invasion first, they wanted quick results. However, Ukraine tried to block the movement of Moscow’s troops. Thus, in this case what prolongs the war is the success of Ukraine.
“Ukraine’s success prevented Russia from securing its war goals,” Waffa said.
In war there is something called asymmetrical power. This condition does not need to be balanced, the important thing is that one party is able to dispel the opponent’s target.
