6 Facts about the Delta Variant, the ‘Fierce’ Variant that Dominates Corona RI

Corona B1617.2 variant which was first discovered in India or varian Delta began to spread in several parts of Indonesia. This variant is classified as a variant of concern (VoC) by WHO because it is suspected to be more infectious than the original variant.

Data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health shows that as of June 13, there have been 107 Delta variants scattered, making it the dominant VoC in the country.

The former Director of WHO SEARO, Prof. Tjandra Yoga Aditama, revealed several related things varian Delta, ranging from the rate of transmission to the impact on the vaccine.

1. Proven to be more contagious

The Delta variant has been shown to increase the risk of transmission. In the UK, there were more than 42,000 cases of the Delta variant, up 70 percent from the previous week or an increase of 29,000 cases within a week.

“Also, Public Health England (PHE) reported that the Delta variant was 60 percent more contagious than the Alfa variant. Also the doubling time ranged from 4.5 to 11.5 days,” explained Prof Tjandra to reporters, Thursday ( 17/6/2021).

2. Number of new patients

The latest data from the UK shows that secondary attack rates or the number of new sufferers of the Delta variant are higher than Alfa. The secondary attack rate for the Delta variant is 2.6 percent and the Alfa variant is 1.6 percent for those with a travel history. In case contacts with no travel history, the cases of the Delta variant were 8.2 percent, while the Alfa variant was 12.4 percent.

3. Severity of disease

Although the Delta variant has not been confirmed to cause more severe infections or cause higher mortality, there have been reports of an increase in hospitalizations due to this variant.

“On the other hand, there are indeed several reports that discuss the possibility of more severe disease caused by this variant,” said Prof. Tjandra.

4. Reinfection

In his presentation, Prof. Tjandra alluded to the impact of varian Delta against the possibility of re-infection after recovery. He said there were reports that in the Delta variant, there was a decrease in neutralization activity related to the risk of reinfection.
