Of what scientists have learned about the various planets, judging by the combination of several factors, Earth remains the most unique. There are many places or planets in the galaxy that humans dream of visiting, but the conditions are not as comfortable as Earth.
“You always hear how Mars looks like Earth, but if you were taken to Mars, you wouldn’t feel happy there at all. It’s not like Earth,” Don Brownlee, an astronomer at the University of Washington, told Space.com. (22/12/2021). Here’s the uniqueness of Earth that other planets don’t have that should be grateful for;
1. Size and Location
Earth is a very comfortable environment for living things. Although the sun goes through an 11-year cycle of activity, this star doesn’t bother Earth much. In addition, the size of the Earth allows it to maintain the atmospheric content that is valuable for life on it.
Earth is a comfortable distance from the sun, orbiting at an average distance of 92,955,807 miles (149,597,870 kilometers). This position allows the Earth to be able to hold water on its surface.
“A planet that is too far away (from the sun) will quickly freeze,” said Diana Valencia, a planetary scientist at the University of Toronto Scarborough in Canada. (Read also; Winter Solstice, Makes Days Shorter in the North of the Earth )
2. Friendly Neighbors
The stability of the earth is also shaped by the presence of the moon whose position is next door. The moon stabilizes Earth’s rotation, preventing drastic polar movements that cause climate change. The moon also creates dynamic conditions on the surface of the water by creating tides.
Jupiter also has an important role for the stability of the Earth, even though it is very far away. With its massive mass, Jupiter acts as a kind of vacuum that cleans up the debris that clutters the solar system.
Imagine if rocks the size of a car and the size of the moon dramatically hit the Earth’s surface. (Read also; 6 Asteroids That Pass Near And Threatening Earth Throughout 2021 )
