Diabetes Diabetes mellitus or diabetes is a chronic disease that can cause serious complications if left untreated. One of the most common risks is sores on the feet (diabetic ulcers) or known as diabetic feet.

Causes of Diabetic Foot Sores

Diabetic foot is a complication of the feet of diabetics due to uncontrolled high blood sugar levels. This complication itself is generally in the form of diabetic ulcers or wounds due to infection or damage to the skin tissue of the feet of diabetics.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes, nerve damage that occurs in diabetics makes them unable to feel pain or strange sensations when their feet are injured.

1. Fungal infection

Fungal infections of the skin on the feet of diabetics are usually caused by Candida albicans. This fungus can attack parts of the skin that are damp, lack of air circulation, and are not exposed to sunlight.

Foot disorders in diabetics who have fungal infections cause itching and red patches on the surface of the feet. This condition further leads to the formation of diabetic ulcers. A common fungal infection is athlete’s foot, also known as water fleas.
