6.9% drop in indemnities paid to policyholders

The volume of indemnities paid directly to policyholders by insurance companies decreased by 6.9% at the end of September 2020. And this to reach 846.5 MD against the sum of 909 MD during the same period of 2019.

Indeed, indemnities paid in the automobile insurance sector fell by 14.6%. Going from 491.9 MD at the end of the third quarter of 2019 to 420.2 MD in the same period of 2020. According to data obtained by the TAP agency of the General Insurance Authority.

The downward trend in compensation payments also included the transport sector. Moreover, this sector recorded a record decline. It reached the level of 50%, remuneration having fallen to 10.7 MD in 2020. And this against 22.5 MD in 2019. On the other hand, the insurance establishments were able to pay a fire insurance indemnity of 64, 5 MD. And this over the first nine months of 2020 against 53.33 MD during the same period of 2019.

In addition, the total number of transactions for insurance companies in Tunisia has increased during the first nine months of 2020. Thus, it records a growth of 4.2% compared to the same period in 2019. the current number is 22 insurance companies.

The turnover of the sector increased from 1946.9 MD during the first nine months of 2019 to 2028.6 MD. And this until the end of September of the previous year.
It is worth noting that the sector transaction turnover growth rate during the 2018/2019 period increased by 8%.

The turnover in the non-life insurance sector increased by 4%, from 1448.4 MD in the first 9 months of 2019 to 1506.9 MD at the end of September 2020.

Concerning the non-life insurance sectors, the automobile insurance sector recorded slight growth. It stabilized at a rate of 2.5%. It reached 853.6 MD in the first three quarters of last year. And this against 832.9 MD in the same period of 2019.

On the other hand, the number of transactions for fire and transport insurance fell by 2.22 and 6.4% respectively. As for life insurance, indicators show a growth in turnover of 6.8%. From 378.3 MD to 404 MD between the first nine months of 2019 and 2020.

Regarding the insurance contracts taken out, the General Insurance Authority indicated in its statistics that the number of contracts had decreased by 8.3%. Two million 223 thousand and 554 contracts having been recorded until the end of September 2020 compared to two million 424 thousand and 485 contracts in the same period of 2019.

The big loser

Indeed, auto insurance recorded a drop of 1.4%. And this with 1 million and 394 thousand and 944 contracts until the end of September 2020. This sector represents the largest share of the number of contracts subscribed,
