6.7 magnitude earthquake shakes southern Chile

An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 6.7 was registered on Sunday off the coast of Corral, in southern Chile, reported the United States Geological Survey. No damage was reported.

The characteristics of the earthquake do not meet the necessary conditions to generate a tsunami off the coast of Chile, the Navy indicated.

The telluric movement was recorded at 6:39 p.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), 140 kilometers (86 miles) west of Corral, distant 860 kilometers (534 miles) south of Santiago. It was felt with different intensities in front of the regions of La Araucanía, Los Ríos, Los Lagos and Biobío.

The National Emergency Office of the Interior Ministry described the movement as medium intensity. At the moment there are no reports of damage to people or property, he added, and basic services are functioning normally.

Commander Rodrigo Holzapel, from the Toltén fire department, in the La Araucanía region, said that after the earthquake they had not received emergency calls.
