JAKARTA, July 3 / WAM / A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck this morning, the province of Papua in the far east of Indonesia, according to the Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysical Agency, which ruled out the occurrence of tsunamis.
The agency said that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 33 kilometers on land, while police sources said that the residents of “Jayapura”, the capital of the region, felt the earthquake strongly, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.
Indonesia is located on both sides of the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a very seismically active area where different plates meet on the Earth’s crust and cause a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes.
