Manila: A 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit the southern Philippines on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said. The shallow earthquake struck around 2:00 p.m., a few kilometers away from Maragusan Municipality in Davao de Oro, a gold-mining province in the mountains of Mindanao Island.
Shallow earthquakes are more damaging than deeper ones. Reports do not indicate any confirmed major damage here. An employee of the Maragusan disaster office told AFP that authorities were investigating reports of landslides on the national highway.
“We have not received any reports of other damage or casualties, but we are checking the villages around the town,” he added.
The quake lasted about 30 seconds and was followed by aftershocks, said Stephanie Clemen of Tagum City, 40 kilometers from Maragusan.
