How fast is 5G Ultra?
Perhaps you remember our tests from 2020, when we checked Plus’s 5G network in several cities shortly after launch. We achieved transfers up to 600 Mb/s. I saw with my own eyes how the speed test indicator passed 500 Mb / s at the Poznań University of Technology at a dizzying pace for those times. Then I watched such transfers with flushed cheeks. It’s hard to believe that it’s only been 3 years and Plus already has something better.
Look: 5G coverage in your city: Poznań has 500+
In short: 5G Ultra gives you even more. Thanks to the introduction of this standard, the technical barrier of 600 megabits can be exceeded. I managed to do it. Even several times.
I carried out the measurements in Piotrków Trybunalski. Of course, I checked the transfers at several transmitters in different parts of the city. One series of measurements took place in the morning and the other in the evening. My tools were Samsung Galaxy A53 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G – both from Plus distribution.
The location of four Plus transmitters at which I checked the speed of the 5G Ultra link in Piotrków Trybunalski
It is worth noting that Plus’s 5G network works in completely different conditions than when 5G was introduced in Poland. In 2020, hardly anyone had a 5G smartphone. Today, the trick is to buy a smartphone that does not support this standard. So I conducted tests surrounded by dozens of people who used the same band and it was definitely crowded.
I recorded the best result in a place that wasn’t the most isolated. I made it in a shopping complex on ul. Sulejowska (1). Although there are a lot of shops and service outlets in the area, and there is no shortage of visitors, the network has risen to the occasion. Downloads are possible here at speeds of up to 712 Mb/s. Just standing in the parking lot.
The record was set off the beaten track, but closer to the center of Piotrków there are also no reasons to complain. On Towarowa Street (2)near the train tracks, no problem and consistently, download speeds exceeded 600 Mb/s. The record is 643 Mb / s, and you can send at speeds above 70 Mb / s.
The next measuring point is located on ul. May 3 (3), close to the center of Piotrków. Mid-range Samsung “dialed” here well over 600 Mb / s. Most of the tests hovered around 620 Mb / s, but one reached 671 Mb / s. The rest of the connection parameters also leave nothing to be desired. You can send at a speed close to 90 Mb / s, which I consider a very decent value for everyday work. The ping did not exceed 20ms and was usually closer to 10ms. Video calls shouldn’t be a problem here either. Anyway, if you use the Plus mobile internet, it’s best in Piotrków.
I regret that the very center of Piotrków cannot boast of the best transfer. I finished the tests at the railway station, where Plus has transmitters on the water tower (4). Unfortunately, despite the trip to the high footbridge, I was unable to capture the carrier frequencies that allow for as fast data transfer as in other parts of the city. Here you can count “only” on 200-300 Mb / s when downloading. So it’s not 5G Ultra, but still more than some “cable” links. And the view is very nice.
What exactly is 5G Ultra?
The name rightly suggests that it is “better” 5G. Exceeding the 600 Mb/s threshold is possible thanks to the aggregation of three frequency bands – two in the 5G standard (2600 MHz and 2100 MHz) and additionally the 4G layer (1800 MHz). The inclusion of 5G on the 2100 MHz band basically brings two benefits. Firstly, the data transfer speed increased, and secondly, it helped Plus to improve its already good coverage.
5G Ultra is available free of charge to all Plus and Plush customers using Plus Abonament, Plus dla Firm, Plus Mix, Plus pre-paid, Plus Internet, Plush ABO and Plush pre-paid offers. All you need is a 5G-enabled smartphone to be able to use 5G Ultra. And of course you have to “capture” all three carriers.
Probably, over time, people within the range of 5G Ultra will see dedicated stampas is now the case with LTE Advanced. There are also chances that 5G Ultra will also support iPhones, after all, Plus has been Apple’s official partner since 2022.
Why did I go to Piotrków Trybunalski?
Piotrków Trybunalski is, in a sense, a playground for engineers. It is here that new systems are launched the fastest and measurements are made here. That is why it was possible to transfer data at a speed of up to 1 Gbps during initial tests in the commercial 5G Plus network.
Look: Plus launched a rocket. There was no such fast 5G in Poland
Of course, our editorial tests will not end in Piotrków – We already have a plan for further action, including in Łódź, Bydgoszcz and Szczecin. Plus has turned on 5G Ultra in many cities in the north and west of the country, and is working on expanding to the south and east.
