Representatives from the media, academia and industry at home and abroad gathered to discuss how 5G technology is accelerating the new development of media convergence by presenting new cases and predicting of new trends.
Du Zhanyuan, chairman of China International Publishing Group, said 5G technology should be used to improve international communication capability. He offered four suggestions. First, the sharing of 5G technology should be actively encouraged in order to improve the common well-being. Second, the application of technology should be accelerated at several levels. Third, the mechanisms compatible with the development of media convergence must be put in place. Fourth, achievements in science and technology should be fully utilized to enhance the capacity of international communication.
Li Ping, a member of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) at the Ministry of Science and Technology and chairman of Science and Technology Daily, pointed out that media convergence is essentially and inevitably a result of the development of science and technology. Mainstream media is expected to deeply integrate traditional media and new media, create a media convergence community, and provide industry standards for future development.
According to Li Ping, the Science and Technology Daily paid close attention to the development of 5G technology and expressed Chinese views on the world stage. Today, international opinions on issues like virus scanning and digital security are complicated. In the face of interrelated situations between the known and the unknown, new mainstream media reinforced by emerging technologies are necessary to maintain a correct stance and a clear mind in international communication. During the opening speech, the guests discussed a range of topics concerning future scientific research. For example, where will the combination of media and new technologies lead the media industry? Zheng Bo, deputy editor of the Economic Daily, said that in the era of 5G, the mainstream media should correct public opinion using new technologies without ever getting lost. It is very important to stick to the right political stance and the media values orientation. Great effort should be made in in-depth reporting to reflect the different perspectives of the media and amplify the current tone in public communications.

Zhang Shenyuan, product manager of the People’s Daily New Media Center, showed that the overall plan must be well designed for advanced technology to support media convergence through the example of live editing tools.
Zhang Shilea, managing director and editor-in-chief of CGTN Digital, said the impact of 5G and artificial intelligence on mainstream journalism should not be ignored and the press should take the lead in adopting the new technologies and accelerate media convergence.
Regarding promoting media convergence through 5G technology, Zhang Baoan, party committee member and technical director of Great Wall New Media Group, said technical staff and relevant platforms should take the lead. initiative to develop media convergence. This includes internal convergence within a journalistic institute, deep convergence between journalism and public affairs, and internal convergence between newspaper industries.

First, 5G has transformed media development from theory to practice, and other fundamental changes will occur. Second, 5G technology offers enormous potential for development. Its current application is only the tip of the iceberg, and there are other areas to explore. Third, the empowerment that 5G technology offers to the development of media convergence is both direct and indirect. More attention should be paid to indirect empowerment. Going forward, the question of how 5G promotes the development of media convergence is a very important topic that deserves further discussion.
