5G Network Predicted to Drive Mobile Phone Sales Increase

The telecommunication company Telkomsel released the fifth generation internet network or 5G in Indonesia last week. Network availability 5G technology is expected to boost the performance of mobile phone sales in Indonesia.

Gadget researcher from Gatorade Lucky Sebastian said the impact of the 5G network on the increase in mobile phone sales in Indonesia will be seen in the third quarter and fourth quarter of 2021. “What is clear is that 5G will create encouraging sales. This 5G network will be bright in Indonesia,” Lucky said to Katadata.co.id, Monday (31/5).

According to Lucky, smartphone manufacturers will also prepare a strategy so that their products are absorbed by the Indonesian market. Along with the launch of 5G from Telkomsel last week, Samsung and Vivo, for example, immediately launched their two new phones, the Galaxy A32 5G and the Vivo V21 5G.

Moreover, 5G smartphones will not only be available in the upper class or flagship, now several manufacturers are also making 5G smartphones in the middle or mid-range class. “In Indonesia, smartphones of the US$ 200 class or Rp 3 million will also be adopted by many vendors,” said Lucky.

The Oppo A74 5G, for example, is priced at IDR 3.799 million in Indonesia. GSM Arena reports, Oppo embeds the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 5G chip on the A74 5G. This chip can also capture 5G network signals on the 2.3 GHz frequency used by Telkomsel.

Then the Galaxy A32 5G from Samsung which is priced at Rp. 3,999 million. This device is supported by a MediaTek Dimensity 720 processor. This smartphone can access band 40 frequencies.

5G smartphones will be a savior from the falling market share of smartphone sales during the pandemic. “The presence of 5G smartphones has encouraged many consumers to change devices, especially in the midst of many people having to limit their movement due to the spread of Covid-19,” he said.

Previously, International Data Corporation (IDC) also said that the presence of 5G smartphones will boost smartphone shipments globally this year. Mobile phone shipments are expected to increase by 7.7% compared to last year and reach 1.38 billion units.

“Shipping is increasing as there continues to be a strong supply-side push towards 5G,” said Ryan Reith, vice president of IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers program.

Meanwhile, 5G mobile phone shipments are expected to grow by almost 130% in 2021. Because 5G network adoption will continue to expand to various regions.

China will lead the 5G smartphone market with almost 50% market share in 2021. Then, the United States (US) will follow with 16% market share.

Markets in other countries such as Western Europe and Asia Pacific apart from Japan and China are also considered significant. The two regions will have a 23.1% share of the worldwide 5G smartphone market by the end of 2021.

In addition, the soaring sales of 5G mobile phones is also in line with the average selling price of mobile phones which is starting to fall. IDC estimates that prices for Android 5G devices will fall 12% year-on-year to US$456. Then, the average price will also continue to fall next year to below $400.

Telkomsel has officially launched the fifth generation internet network aka 5G in six locations in Greater Jakarta last week (27/5). The six are Kelapa Gading, Pondok Indah, Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK), BSD, Widya Chandra, and Alam Sutera.

Then, the 5G network will be deployed in stages in Solo, Medan, Balikpapan, Denpasar, Batam, Surabaya, Makassar, and Bandung. “I hope that 5G technology will not only accelerate the digital lifestyle of Indonesian people to become smart digital users, but also encourage the birth of smart digital entrepreneurs,” said President Director of Telkomsel Setyanto Hantoro in a press release last week (24/5).

At this early stage, customers need to make adjustments to the software so that smartphones can connect to Telkomsel 5G services. This procedure will be provided by each device manufacturer.

In a written statement, Telkomsel stated that devices that support 5G services from the company are those with NSA or non-standalone 5G technology capabilities at a frequency of 2300 MHz or 2.3 GHz.

Meanwhile, of the four types of smartphones, there are no products from Samsung or Apple. Telkomsel will expand cooperation with various other device manufacturer partners.

“We will continue to make gradual and measurable efforts in order to expand and facilitate the availability of Telkomsel 5G services for the community, including deepening collaboration with 5G device providers,” said Lolyta Sihite, General Manager of Loyalty and Device Partnership Management at Telkomsel in a press release last week (29/29/2020). 5).
