59 People Have Died on Irish Roads in 2023: May Bank Holiday Weekend Sees 188 Arrests for Driving Under the Influence

Irish roads have tragically claimed 59 lives so far this year, on par with last year’s tally. Go-Safe checked over half a million vehicles for speeding and fined 2,159. The May Bank Holiday weekend saw 11 serious and life-threatening injuries, as well as 188 arrests for driving under the influence. During the holiday, Garda erected 744 checkpoints for mandatory intoxicant testing, with 3,179 roadside drug and alcohol tests. Over 900 speeding offences received fixed charge penalty notices, and 354 vehicles detained for offences including drivers without insurance. Garda National Roads Policing Bureau’s Chief Superintendent Jane Humphries emphasizes road safety awareness and law-enforcement, calling for sobriety and defensive driving. All road users should heed her counsel and choose safety over recklessness.
