The Amsterdam police arrested 58 people during a day of protests. Just like the past weekends, hundreds of protesters again called for attention to what they consider to be far too severe corona measures by the cabinet.
At the end of the morning, according to the municipality, about 500 people gathered for an unannounced demonstration on the Museumplein. That area had already been designated a security risk area because the police, municipality and the Public Prosecution Service took into account unannounced demonstrations and demonstrators with weapons. The measure meant that the police were allowed to carry out preventive searches.
Name calling
Banners were displayed on Museumplein and participants chanted slogans such as “love, freedom” and “no dictatorship.” Images showed people with berets standing at attention. The Veterans Platform has distanced itself from the protest. Between that group and the protesters were people in white clothing, said to be health workers.
The municipality writes in a press release that participants did not keep enough distance from each other and that police officers were called names. Since the demonstration was not notified, the authorities put an end to it. “The police acted in a controlled manner,” said the municipality, which further emphasizes that demonstrating in a previously agreed and safe place is always allowed in Amsterdam.
Those present were not deterred by water cannons:
