Elea Serrano Martínez, 23, yesterday dedicated her victory in the Almom-Drasanvi race to her grandmother, a two-time breast cancer survivor. In 23.51 minutes she covered more than 5 kilometers of a path – “I left almost 6 kilometers”, she says – she of the first face to face after the pandemic and of the eighth organized by the Leonese Association of Operated Women on for breast cancer. “It is one of the few popular competitions in León and I sign up to support this cause.” Behind her came Mónica Martínez, 49 years old. It is the first competition she participates in Monica after winning breast cancer, for which she underwent surgery in January. “I took part in multiple competitions before cancer, but this is the first one I have done since I was operated on. Now that I feel better I will try to participate in more calls again. She moved me a lot because the cause deserves it. My mother also had breast cancer. Immediately after her, Mónica, her 15-year-old daughter, Zaida Caballero, crossed the finish line. “I signed up at the last minute to accompany her.”
The race this year saw the participation of 5,500 women, but men who wanted to support the cause also went along the way, even if the organization’s regulation does not allow them to buy the bib. Among them is Luis, wearing a pink shirt. «It is absurd to have to explain why I am coming to the race. Equality means that men who want to support this cause can also come and because, even if statistically we are fewer, breast cancer affects us too ».
Jesus, José Luis and José María, the three brothers-in-law and genders of women, went shirtless. “We would like to participate by purchasing the number, but they won’t let us. We come to support women “.
Despite the wind, the cold and the threat of rain, which finally respected the course of the march, even if it ruined the final party at the Hispanico with the awards ceremony and the zumba, the pink tide has returned to recover the streets of León to make breast cancer visible and raise funds to fight the disease. Profits will go to Salamanca’s Breast Cancer Research Center.
Women with strollers, girls and groups of families, like the 23 who moved from Milla del Páramo who share the surname Celadilla: “We come to walk, but we have to support this cause that affects us all, even if we don’t. cancer”.
For Marta, 50, from Villaquilambre, it is the third year of studies. “But this year is special because it’s the first I’ve run after winning breast cancer.”
