550 hp, thick cheeks & rump

2022 is apparently a good year for the comeback of big names and legendary shapes: just like the upcoming BMW M4 CSL (G82), the Porsche 911 Sport Classic unveiled today also features a distinctive spoiler integrated into the tailgate, which creates an unmistakable rump and attracts not only collectors but also aesthetes. In addition to the rump, the two special models intended to crown their series could also be more or less on par in terms of performance: the Porsche 911 Sport Classic has 550 hp, the BMW M4 CSL should be in a very similar region and could definitely be have the same number in the data sheet.

But even if there are commonalities, hardly any customer will seriously hesitate between the two models: Porsche 911 Sport Classic and BMW M4 CSL are aimed at convinced lovers of the basic model who long for a very special further development of the respective technology concept. In other words: Anyone who orders a Sport Classic will only very rarely buy their first Porsche 911 – and in the case of the BMW M4 CSL, too, there was probably earlier intensive contact with products from Garching.

Enticing ingredients for enthusiasts are in abundance here and there: The wide body of the turbo models serves as the basis for the Porsche 911 Sport Classic, but the power of the 3.7-liter biturbo boxer with pure rear-wheel drive and manual transmission is used can be experienced even more intensively and is therefore also much more desirable for nostalgic 11 fans. The fact that the Sport Classic, which is unmistakable thanks to the rump at the rear, has 100 hp less than a current 911 Turbo S, is significantly slower at 4.1 seconds for the sprint from 0 to 100 and cannot quite keep up with the top speed either Fans of the 911 history really don’t care.

Where Porsche locates the vehicle itself becomes clear in the video embedded above: The Sport Classic is the reincarnation of the legendary 911 from the 1960s and 1970s and thus continues a tradition that has been cultivated at Porsche for decades. It is not to be expected that the 1,250 copies of the special model will find any buyers, also in view of the expected collector’s value and the associated price increases – despite a price of at least 276,284 euros, which can also be easily compared to the purchase of a 911 Turbo and a 718 Boxster would suffice.
