The United States was hit by 55 hurricane-force wind systems, the highest number on record since monitoring of this phenomenon began in 2004.
Most of these were in the center of the country, in the form of an imaginary diagonal line from the southwest (New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma) to the northeast (Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio); causing several forest fires, destruction of power lines and chaos and accidents on roads.

This system of storms caused dusts that reduced visibility to zero west of Wakeeney, Kansas.
This weather event comes just days after a series of devastating tornadoes wreaked havoc in Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Illinois and Kentucky, killing more than 85 people.
