548 people died because of a smallpox outbreak in the Congo

Congolese Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba said that since the beginning of 2024, 548 people have died as a result of an outbreak of monkey pox or Mpox. The virus hit every region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

On Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) has also declared the increase in mpox in Africa as a global public health emergency (PHIC). WHO is also concerned about the increase in cases in the DRC that could spread to neighboring countries.

“According to the latest epidemiological report, our country has registered 15,664 possible cases and 548 deaths since the beginning of the year,” said Samuel, who was quoted as saying. detikHealth from NDTV.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a country with a population of about 100 million people. The country consists of 26 provinces.

The most affected areas in the Democratic Republic of Congo are South Kivu, North Kivu, Tshopo, Equateur, North Ubangi, Tshuapa, Mongala and Sankuru, said Kamba.

The UN health agency’s decision came a day after the African Union’s health watchdog declared its own public health emergency over the chronic disease.
