What if the rich go?
The idea of taxing the rich sounds fair, but it is dangerous. In New York, over 15 percent of all revenue comes from just 2,000 taxpayers. The richest five percent carry 60 percent of the household. An exodus of this group would create major problems for the city’s finances.
“If we lose even a few thousand of these people, tax revenues will shrink dramatically,” investment banker Euan Rellie told the Times in London. Rellie votes for the Democrats and believes the state can invest in infrastructure. But local taxes would have unintended side effects. Many people from the financial sector fled the city during the pandemic. “The question is, do some of them say, ‘Fuck it, I’m not going back.'” Analyzes of cell phone data show that the city has lost around 70,000 residents. Even if there is no reliable data, it is assumed that there are many wealthy people among them who have moved to a second residence outside the city.
