514 People Poisoned at Azhen Vietnamese French Bread Store in Taoyuan City: Owner Faces Prosecution

A food poisoning case broke out at the famous store “Azhen Vietnamese French Bread” in Zhongli Market in Taoyuan City in early August last year. The meal was sold due to the use of ingredients contaminated with “Salmonella” and “Cactus bacteria”, resulting in 514 consumers. After eating, patients developed food poisoning symptoms of acute gastroenteritis such as fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. The Taoyuan District Prosecutor’s Office concluded an investigation on the 29th and determined that the person in charge, Ruan Shizhen, violated the food safety law and initiated public prosecution.

The case occurred in early August last year. On August 2 and 3, Nguyen Thi Thuy made meat-containing bread meals or meat-free bread meals using ingredients contaminated with “Salmonella”, resulting in 514 consumers. After eating it, people went to the hospital one after another because of food poisoning symptoms of acute gastroenteritis such as fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. After a stool sample was collected and sent for testing, a positive reaction for “Salmonella” was detected.

After receiving the notification, the Taoyuan City Government Health Bureau went to Ruan Nu’s food preparation area to conduct random inspections and inspections. It was found that the four-door refrigerator in the food preparation area was not warm enough, the insect-proof curtains were not tightly closed, flies were infested, and some ingredients were not fastened and layered. There were raw embroidery on the shelf and it was close to the dipping plate, and some packaged ingredients were not marked with dates. After collecting Vietnamese French bread and meat-based meal bread for inspection, the results were found to be “Salmonella” and “Cactus Bacillus”. Immediately Ordered to close.

On the 29th, prosecutors indicted Nguyen Thi Thu for violating the Food Safety and Hygiene Management Act. The prosecutor said that Nguyen Thi Thu was frank about the facts of the crime. Before the prosecution, Nguyen had reached settlements with 283 victims and compensated 2,244,551. Yuan, there are currently 198 victims who are still being supplemented and contacted.
