50PLUS Party Leadership Controversy and Conflicts: Van Hooft vs Verkoelen

Van Hooft received slightly more votes than Verkoelen: 51 to 48 percent. Last weekend he was removed by the police from the membership meeting of 50PLUS, which is known for internal conflicts.

In conflict with management

The party had removed Van Hooft’s membership, but the judge reversed that expulsion. De Brabander is in conflict with the board, which Verkoelen had put forward. The membership meeting was canceled and continued online today.

The brand new party leader acknowledges that his appointment came about ‘in an unusual way’, but emphasizes that there is now a list drawn up by the members. Numbers two and three have also been changed compared to the draft list.

“I hope that people will support the democratically elected list,” says Van Hooft. The idea is that there will be unity and that it will no longer be about the figures, he believes.

Disappeared from room

50PLUS has been plagued for years by internal quarrels and splits, which often revolve around positions within the party. In the previous elections, the elderly party won one seat, but after the departure of former party leader Liane den Haan, the party disappeared from Parliament. On November 22, 50PLUS will make another attempt to obtain a seat in Parliament (or more).

Chairman Jorien van den Herik, who resigned early, was not yet available for comment.
