Letters circulating in Germany promise 5,000 euros a month to serve in the foreign legion in Ukraine.
They claim to be recruiting candidates for the Foreign Legion to fight against the Russian army in Ukraine. “The Ukrainian consulate did not send such letters,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko in Kiev. According to him, it is an element of a disinformation campaign against Ukraine.
The diplomat presented a scanned letter received from a man from the German city of Kamp-Lintfort in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The sender is the Consulate General of Ukraine in Dusseldorf. The letter offers 5,000 euros a month for service in the legion, and in the event of the soldier’s death – and 100,000 euros in compensation for relatives.
Officially, soldiers at the front in Ukraine receive the equivalent of about 2,400 euros. Military personnel recruited from abroad are offered the same conditions as Ukrainians, writes DW.
In Germany, there is a five-year prison sentence for recruiting German citizens to serve in a foreign army. The police have been notified of the cases. “The security services are investigating the matter,” a Düsseldorf police spokesman said.
Since the end of February, Ukraine has been fighting against the Russian invasion. The so-called Foreign Legion was created by President Volodymyr Zelensky after the start of the war. It is said that several thousand foreigners are included in its composition.
