Around 500 students from the Heinrich-Heine-Realschule in Neuwied have initiated a peace campaign against the current war, but also generally for worldwide peace. The students had made numerous posters and collages with the clear appeal: “Peace to the world”.
Neuwied. For Mike Klüber, the headmaster of the Heinrich-Heine-Realschule in Neuwied, one thing is clear: “That was the most overwhelming thing I’ve experienced in my career”. The educator speaks of the peace campaign of “his” school, in which around 500 students took part. With the support of the teaching staff, they had designed numerous posters and collages in various languages and populated the schoolyard to make clear their great wish: “Peace for the world”.
Peace begins with yourself
In his short speech, Headmaster Klüber pointed out that war can never be more important than peace. He emphasized that peace begins on a small scale, with everyone. Peace can only have a social impact if the individual lives in peace with himself. “If young people show publicly that they stand up for peace in the world, then they are on the right track,” Klüber continued.
Student representative Maryam Mesbah made it clear that the students want a world without arguments and strife. She recalled that although the Ukraine war is currently the focus of interest, people around the world – for example in Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Palestine – live in fear, families are being torn apart and deaths are to be mourned .
In line with the Heinrich Heine Secondary School’s appeal for peace, those gathered finally sang the song “Mensch ist Mensch” by Moe Phoenix, a call for tolerance and mutual respect – and the apt line “No one is in the right when it degenerates”. In the run-up to the peace campaign, the student body had organized a waffle sale. The income of 300 euros goes to an aid organization.
