500 Photographs from National Museum of Modern Art and Marin Karmitz Collections at Center Pompidou

The subtitle says it straight away: this plural can be very singular. The exhibition covered in this catalog — at the Center Pompidou until March 25, 2024 — brings together 500 photographs from two collections. The public one (40,000 prints) of the National Museum of Modern Art, and the private one (1,500 prints) of Mr. Marin Karmitz, producer, distributor, founder of the MK2 company. How can they communicate? The answers are found in the representations of the human figure proposed, “body to body” between the two backgrounds. One hundred and twenty artists echo each other through thematic divisions which implicitly assign the imagination of the photographs to predefined universes: “First faces”, with which Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, Paul Strand, Walker Evans, Man Ray are associated… “Spectres”, with Lisette Model, Christian Boltanski, etc. We will prefer to evoke the powerful narrative charge of the Karmitz collection: the way he looks at history also tells the story of his own perspective.
