500 Fishing Boats Blocked at Ports to Save Dolphins – Unprecedented Council of State Measure

A month to save the dolphins! From this Monday and for a month, 500 fishing boats on the Atlantic coast, including 15 in Arcachon, remain blocked at the port. Unprecedented measure taken by the Council of State, contacted by environmental defenders to limit the capture of dolphins.

Fifteen fishing boats forced to remain docked at the port of Arcachon this Monday morning. They are no longer allowed to go to sea and lay their nets to limit accidental captures of dolphins in the Bay of Biscay. This unprecedented measure taken by the Council of State applies to approximately 500 ships on the French coast. The ban concerns all boats over 8 meters equipped with a certain type of net. Last week, the Minister of Ecological Transition Christophe Béchu assured that fishermen would be compensated up to 80% of lost turnover. Not enough to reassure Olivier Mercier, shipowner and fisherman in Arcachon: “The period in question represents 25% of turnover, it is the most prolific period for us. We will eventually find ourselves with companies which will close because some will not withstand the shock and a knowledge to do which will disappear. We hit on agriculture, we hit on fishing, we may not have to forget that human beings can survive without electricity, without their smartphone, but on the other hand they cannot survive without eating. ‘
