500 American athletes in protest of strict abortion laws

This is not the first time Megan Rapinoe has made her voice heard in political contexts. The 36-year-old world star in football has been, among other things openly critical against former president Donald Trump and stood in the front line of the women’s national team fight for equal pay.

Now she is back in the fray due to a burning issue in the United States.

A couple of weeks ago The abortion was banned in Texas if cardiac activity was detected by ultrasound of a fetus – with the exception of rape or incest – and the law, which President Joe Biden called unconstitutional, could copied in several states.

Now has over 500 American Athletes signed an appeal to the Supreme Court of the United States to protect the right to abortion, this in connection with an ongoing case in Mississippi that can overturn the so-called Roe v. Wade ruling from 1973 – a guiding HD ruling that has since guaranteed the right to abortion until approximately the 24th week of pregnancy.

The list of names includes 26 Olympians, another 73 professional athletes and a number of sports federations. They argue, among other things, that the right to abortion has benefited female regrowth in sport and express concern for future practitioners if stricter laws are introduced.

Some of the prominent ones The representatives are basketball stars Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird and also Megan Rapinoe, who according to the news agency Reuters calls legislation that restricts abortion rights “outrageous and un-American”.

“As women athletes and people in the world of sports, we must have the power to make important decisions about our own bodies and have control over our reproductive lives,” added the football player, who won bronze for the United States at the Tokyo Olympics this summer, in a statement on Monday.

What abortion opponents in Republican-led Mississippi want to achieve is a ban on the right to terminate a pregnancy after 15 weeks. The Supreme Court announced on Monday that the oral argument in the case will begin on December 1 and that the verdict will come at the end of June next year.
