A table tennis club knows how to celebrate: 50 years of table tennis at TSV Herbolzheim was celebrated over two days with a ceremony, a friendly game, marquee, music band and a cozy get-together. It was remarkable what an extensive program the department with its 160 members and 10 teams (4 men, 4 boys 18, 2 boys 13) had put together in the Heilbronn district. And the people flocked. Not only the numerous members, who were all uniformly present in the green jersey, but also the mayor of Neudenau, Manfred Hebeiss, and many local residents came to celebrate. Keyword residents: Herbolzheim has 1,608 residents, so every tenth resident is a member of the table tennis department. If that were the same in Baden-Württemberg with 11 million inhabitants, Baden-Württemberg would have over a million table tennis members – unfortunately there are only around 100,000. Therefore: Table tennis at TSV Herbolzheim – a big club, a stronghold!
However, Herbolzheim is not only a large club because of its membership data. The program of the table tennis department is obviously up to date. A leisure group has been flourishing for 10 years, 20 members are active here fortnightly on Sundays. Beatrix Richter from this group received a box of training balls from the TTBW side, combined with the request to bring girls’ and women’s sports to Herbolzheim in the next 50 years to flourish.
Youth work has the highest priority. The proof: 6 youth teams go to the tables in the round of points. The 1st boys 18 even managed to get promoted to the association’s highest youth class, the association’s upper league. A few floors down, but important for the future, the 1st men were at the top at the end of the season: winning the district league A title fits the 50th anniversary.
Humor and self-mockery ensure a successful sense of community within the Herbolzheim table tennis department. The festival program testified to this. There was a “junk tournament” on offer. And: The extremely successful evening of celebrations ended with a video that caused laughter among the around 150 guests.
