Within the framework of the Native Potato project promoted by the Regional Government of Huánuco through the Regional Directorate of Agriculture, 50 tons of native potato seed arrived in the region. As announced by the Director of Agriculture, Yarushel Valenzuela, this delivery seeks to strengthen the cultivation of three varieties of potatoes: red huayro, yellow peruanita and yellow tumbay.

The seeds will be distributed in 127 demonstration plots, benefiting farmers in the provinces of Yarowilca, Dos de Mayo, Ambo, Huánuco, Pachitea and Huamalíes. The objective is to improve the cultivation techniques of this tuber, which is an emblematic product of the department.

Tolomeo Justo Jacinto, project coordinator, reported that among the next actions is the installation of a 400-square-meter regional in vitro laboratory to guarantee the quality of the seeds. In addition, they will build greenhouses in each beneficiary province, six collection centers and implement technical irrigation, fertilization and other resources to enhance agricultural production.

With an investment of more than S/37 million, the Papa Nativa project will benefit 30 localities in 37 districts in the provinces of Yarowilca, Dos de Mayo, Ambo, Huánuco, Pachitea and Huamalíes, promoting agricultural development and food security in the department.

Through these initiatives, important tools and knowledge are provided for farmers to improve their production and quality of life.
