$ 50 billion hits family after bug

A family living in Louisiana (United States) saw a deposit of 50 billion dollars (42 billion euros) appear on their bank statement on June 12. The members immediately understood that this money was not intended for them.

The Jameses discovered the payment while checking the mother’s bank account on the Chase Bank app, reports FOX 11. “We didn’t win it so there was nothing we could do with it,” said Sr. Darren James. The couple and their two children, however, briefly imagined the existence of a rich unknown uncle who would have died leaving them his fortune.

A “technical problem” according to the bank

The Americans, however, quickly came to their senses. “We couldn’t stop thinking about the person who would come knocking on our door” to claim their due, explained the father. The latter had worked in the police before becoming a real estate agent. He explained that for him, keeping the money would have been theft.

The billions of dollars remained in the bank account for four days before being recovered by the establishment. Chase Bank mentioned “a technical problem that affected a limited number of accounts”. Darren James has indicated that he wants details of the malfunction.

He wondered about a possible security breach concerning his wife’s account. “Seeing so many zeros on his account, it was a great feeling as long as they were there,” said the American. He also said that if he really had such an amount, he would pass it on to others, for example by building a children’s hospital.
