A measure that dispels all doubts: Free car tax for five years but only for those who own electric vehicles. An incentive for the green transaction.
The fact that it is a regional tax does not fail to create some misunderstandings about the car tax. In fact, it is not always said that the news circulating about the tax on car ownership concerns the national sphere. This, a few months ago, had for example led to the belief that among the measures designed to contain the effects of the crisis there was even its cancellation. None of this. Some regions had in fact ordered ad hoc reductions, while the policy of cutting the oldest tax bills had led to the cancellation, but only of the oldest outstanding taxes, between the year 2000 and 2010 and only within a certain income threshold.
In reality, however, there is another facility in this regard. The car tax, in fact, for some categories of motorists could be free, at least for the first five years from registration. A “bonus”, in fact, however limited only to certain vehicles but which goes alongside an exemption policy that already affects some taxpayers, such as the disabled. As mentioned, however, since it is a regional tax, the regional authorities themselves will determine any further reasons for exemption.
Car tax, that’s who it’s free for the first five years
As for the free car tax for the first five years, 18 out of 20 regions have adopted this solution. The free admission starts from the date of the first registration. And, after this period, there will be a reduction of 75%. Provided, of course, that you fall into the category of beneficiaries provided for by the general legislation. Specifically, it refers to motorists who own electric vehicles. In practice, a limited category but a move that undoubtedly represents an incentive to purchase vehicles with low consumption and limited environmental impact.

If you own a vehicle registered in October 2021, therefore, the car tax will be free until 2026, and then proceed with the payment but with a significant reduction. If, for example, you had to pay a stamp duty of 300 euros, the total to be paid will not exceed 75. A measure is in agreement in practically all the Italian regions, which are betting strongly on the green transaction, as well as the central government. Only two territories are exceptions, namely Piedmont and Lombardy, but only because here the free car tax for electric vehicles is already such. And it is forever.
