Here we go again … The “fashion month” is launched and, as tradition dictates, New York is the first to kick off. When, who, where, what, how? We tell you everything you absolutely need to know about New York Fashion Week.
When was New York Fashion Week born?
The biennial fashion mass officially baptizede “New York Fashion Week” in 1993 by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), just after that of London. But in reality, this one saw the light of day half a century earlier, in 1943, under the unglamorous name of “Press Week”. The purpose of this event was to promote American fashion and give buyers an alternative to Parisian houses.
When is New York Fashion Week?
New York Fashion Week takes place twice a year, in February and September. The first presents the autumn-winter collections, the second the spring-summer collections. The next dates are:
- New York Fashion Week Fall / Winter 2020-2021: February 7-12, 2020
- New York Fashion Week Spring / Summer 2021: September 11-16, 2020
Who is parading during New York Fashion Week?
In recent years, there has been a noticeable decrease in designers attending New York Fashion Week. Big names in the fashion world have indeed decided toabandon the American capital for the benefit of other cities. This is among others the case of Victoria Beckham, installed in London since 2018, or of the creators Joseph Altuzarra and, more recently, of Jérémy Scott who abandoned the Big Apple and set sail for the City of Light. Despite this, the shows of many important designers such as Tom Ford (absent this season), The Row – founded by the Olsen sisters – Sies Marjan, Brandon Maxwell, Ralph Lauren, Jason Wu, Prabal Gurung and Oscar de la Renta remain unmissable. Since Tom Ford took over from Diane Von Furstenberg as CFDA chairman, many have wondered if his taking over will be a new momentum in American fashion. In May 2019, he announced to shorten the duration of fashion week to five days instead of a week. To be continued …

Where does New York Fashion Week take place?
For decades, shows were held in hotels or large buildings, but in 1994 the CFDA decided to centralize events in Bryant Park, near the New York Public Library. Sixteen years later, the fashion circus moved to Lincoln Center and then to Clarkson Square. Today, many parades are held at Spring Studios at TriBeCa or at Pier 59 Studios, near the Hudson River. Still others opt for their seat or for significant places such as Tommy Hilfiger, who performed this season at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem or Oscar de la Renta, who had previously paraded in the imposing Morgan Library.
